Culture
San Vigilio di Marebbe is located in Val Badia, one of the five valleys of the Dolomites that together form a territory known as Ladinia, with its own culture and even its own language. It is a small world, unique and authentic, rich in traditions and peculiar experiences.
Language
In San Vigilio di Marebbe the locals speak Ladin, a Rhaeto-Romanic language born in the isolation of the mountains and still alive nowadays. It is the third official language of South Tyrol, together with Italian and German.
Cuisine
Typical Ladin cuisine is an explosion of flavours – whether you try genuine dishes or those revisited with great elegance in a more contemporary way. Balotes, tutres, fortaies, canci, panicia - find out what lies behind these names and savour every day spent in San Vigilio.
Nature
San Vigilio di Marebbe is the right starting point for the exploration of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located right at the gates of the Fanes-Senes-Braies nature park, where you can soak up the charm of unspoilt nature, among waterfalls, streams, and crystal-clear lakes, including the renowned Lake Braies. All of it under the watchful eye of the majestic peaks reaching 3000 meters. Worth visiting in both summer and winter.
People
Farmers and artisans who have dedicated their lives to the traditional crafts, yet keeping up to date with modern times. The Ladins are a good example of evolution with respect to their roots and their land, where hospitality has always been one of the highest priorities.
Traditions
Traditional costumes that are still worn for particular festivities, ancient customs that have survived up to our days, genuine arts and crafts handed down from generation to generation and that particular charm of the typical “Viles” (settlements) - in San Vigilio you can feel an enchanting atmosphere of authenticity and mystery that evokes legends of the Fanes kingdom and of the warrior-princess Dolasilla.
