San Vigilio di Marebbe

San Vigilio di Marebbe, called "Al Plan de Mareo" in Ladin, is situated 1201 meters above sea level in a basin surrounded by important dolomitic summits (Piz de Plaies, Piz da Peres, Paraccia, Plan de Corones, Pares).

The 1.200 inhabitants of the small village are mostly Ladin native speakers and still represent the culture and the traditional way of living of a small Ladin mountain village.

In the last years, San Vigilio went through several important changes, primary concerning civil infrastructures. Many foot-walks have been arranged, as also small squares, in order to guarantee a comfort and secure holiday to pedestrians and to families with small children. Furthermore, since no main road passes through the village, it is quiet calm.

The church represents the center of the village and is dedicated to the saint Vigilio. Originally gothic, the church was rebuilt, however, between 1781 and 1782 in rococo-style. The frescos in the church are well known and like mostly every church belonging to a small mountain village, the cemetery surrounds it.
